During the mid to late Eighties the club looked to save money by purchasing the (then) fashionable Penguin polo shirts as well as brewing a batch of Port to sell as a Fund Raiser. The Port featured a Penguin on the label, so we've dug up some history on the Penguin.
Official History of the Penguin...
During early 80's, Thirroul Cricket Club was sponsored by Thirroul Leagues Club... we also had a hot side at this time too, but alas all good things come to an end and upon the departure of a number of players the club also departed the sponsorship of the Leagues Club, so with no-where to drink, the boys headed to the "Poof's Bar" at the side of the Rex Hotel (now the site of Beaches) one Saturday night.
Pat Nolan, Kevin Raffler, and Brett Farragher arrived all wearing Penguin Brand shirts... much to the disgust of Mal Gouldstone who laid into the boys all night long.
Next weekend, Shilby, Joel Stratton and a number of others in the 1st Grade side arrived at the "Poof's Bar" wearing their Penguin shirts... the only one not wearing a Penguin shirt was big Mal! In return Mal copped it all night long from the other blokes.
Following the next game, the boys arrived once again at the Rex to find Mal sitting there in a Penguin shirt... thus the "Thirroul Penguins" were born.
Thank you Pat Nolan for providing details on the History of the Penguin.
