No 1 - The Hundred that never was

George Thirtle (pictured) made the declaration after Gary Cajar had passed triple figures. But did he?
In the late 1980's in Third Grade, the Butchers had a turf game at Hollymount Park (can't remember who we played). One of our veteran players Gary Cajar was closing in on a century. Skipper George Thirtle was keen to declare and have a bowl, but decided to wait for him to get his ton. As soon as Gary passed the 100, George declared.

Jock Stewart was scoring, added up his score again, only to find it was only 97 so that's how it was officially recorded.

As you can imagine Gary was a little bit upset. The ironic part was Gary was a maths teacher at Bulli High School at the time, and Jock was one of his pupils at one time.

Jock blamed Gary for not teaching him properly - it is tough to come back from that!

Gary's son ended up playing 1st Grade for Albion Park some years later. The Butchers played them about five or six years ago in the Country Cup at Hollymount, Gary was there watching. As you would guess, when I brought it up he was still seething about Jock that day.

A great tale that is etched into Butcher Folklore.
