The NDCC 1st Grade Butchers are in a good position after day one in their 1st Grade clash with Port Kembla at Hollymount East. After being sent in a good deck with plenty of early assistance for the seamers, the Butchers showed plenty of patience with the outfield offering no value for shots for the batsman.
Diminutive top order batsman, Matthew Salakas showed the application the team has been looking for with a well compiled 46 from 154 balls in a 3 hour stint in the middle. This knock, added with Scott Beckett (19), Lee Turner (18), plus contributions from keeper Josh Colmar, & John Robinson took the Butchers to 149. A competitive total given the sluggish outfield and good conditions for bowlers.
Jamal Banfield then put the odds back towards the Butchers with a good spell of bowling, snaring 3 wickets for 10 to leave the Blacks in some early trouble at 3/16.
Still plenty of work to be done by the guys, however the game is there to be won.
