This weeks Player of the Week goes to 2nd Grade offie Brice Hilliard for his incredible contribution in the match against Wests at Figtree on Saturday.
Brice isn't noted for his batting (though he works hard at it) and when he stode to the crease the Butchers were still in danger at 7/116. From here you hope for 150, but know full well that 130 is very possible. It was immense pressure for the youngster who a week before had been part of a strong side that were bundled for 101.
What ensued was a memorable 62-run 8th wicket partnership with joint POTW Michael Doig. After an early scare Brice settled in and displayed the grit needed with a number of delightfully timed whips to the boundary. Four boundaries in all but the one that stood out was a nonchalant flick through midwicket that raced away. Brice would go on to record his highest score since his 40 in 4th Grade nearly two years ago. Ensuring the Butchers reached a most defendable 194 he then turned the screws with the ball.
Wests were comfortable at 1/69, and still so at 2/76 but here Brice took over. Gone were the over pitched deliveries, today his flight and guile were spot on. First he turned one through the gate and removed the top scoring opener. His injection juiced the Butchers as two run outs occured in quick succession, along with a further three wickets to the young tweaker. NDCC swept through the middle order, remarkably Wests themselves were 7/119 at one point. They managed only 137, further highlighting the importance of Hilliard's knock earlier.
Finishing the day with 26 (33) and 4/15 off 10 in 2nd Grade earns Brice this weeks Player of the Week!
Tavis Ryan-Colton is unlucky after picking up his first five-for since returning to the Butchers. Dan Bond was the pick of the bowlers with 3/15 in his 1st Grade debut. Ray Blaas continued impressive form in a humiliated side, taking 4/78 and backing it up with 54*. And finally Matt Hancox for his barely believeable 1/68 in five overs.
