This weeks Player of the Week goes to 2nd Grade all-rounder Michael Doig for his rearguard 75 in the match against Wests at Figtree on Saturday.
Against Uni the week before he entered the fray at 6/39, this time not much better at 6/65. Mark Cottom was entirely solid at the top but five single digit scores fell around him. Michael was able to knuckle down, blocking 10 of his first 11 balls as he worked on a 51-run partnership with Mark. As he got his eye in though he went on a calculated rampage.
Benson tried to bounce him and disappeared over the first row of cars in the car park. The spinner was punished every time he went short or long. Though Cottom fell for a good 36, Michael then turned on a memorable 62-run 8th wicket partnership with joint POTW Brice Hilliard. The opening bowlers returned but now it was too late. Six boundaries and five sixes went to all parts as Doig turned 2 from 11 into 75 from 52. When it was over the score was 8/188 and the Butchers now in a position of dominance.
Michael was able to extract the opener in his first over but would later succumb to cramps. Which was alright, because he got a great seat in slips for the Brice Hilliard off-spin show. NDCC swept through the middle order, remarkably Wests themselves were 7/119 at one point. They managed only 137, further highlighting the importance of Doig's knock earlier.
Tavis Ryan-Colton is unlucky after picking up his first five-for since returning to the Butchers. Dan Bond was the pick of the bowlers with 3/15 in his 1st Grade debut. Ray Blaas continued impressive form in a humiliated side, taking 4/78 and backing it up with 54*. And finally Matt Hancox for his barely believeable 1/68 in five overs.
